Bob Speare, Professional birder and photography instructor

Bob’s focus in any of his programs is teaching–insuring that everyone has a first class learning experience by sharing his knowledge and experience in a fun and engaging way. His goal is that everyone fully enjoys each class and adds to their own knowledge and enthusiasm on the topic.

Bob’s hands-on photography workshops include both classroom time and plenty of time in the field. Aimed at beginners as well as seasoned photographers, each workshop includes learning about the settings and functions of your camera along with field photography techniques. After introducing a topic or technique, participants use the beauty of the Lowcountry to hone their photography skills with time to photograph. This also allows Bob to move through the group and work with each participant individually throughout the course.

Birding in the Lowcountry is very special and Bob enjoys introducing new birders as well as birders that are new to the area to the amazing habitats found here and the special birds they attract. The daily pace of his programs allows groups to visit a couple prime birding locations, but also provides adequate time to fully appreciate each place and the birds found there. Bob will describe the fieldmarks, behaviors and songs and calls that help to identify birds in the field. Regardless of the season, there’s always good birding here in the Lowcountry!

Bob Speare enjoyed a 25-year career with the Massachusetts Audubon Society, where he developed and taught hundreds of programs on all aspects of New England flora and fauna, with a strong emphasis on birding and nature photography. Additionally, he’s led birding and photography tours throughout the US and abroad.

Since moving to South Carolina in 2015, Bob quickly developed knowledge on the local environment by becoming a Lowcountry Master Naturalist and South Carolina Master Gardener. He volunteers for the Hilton Head Audubon and the Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge, teaches a Birding 101 course, co-teaches the Lowcountry Master Naturalist program for teachers, and leads both birding and photography programs and tours for private individuals and a variety of groups including Road Scholar.
